2. iWaGSS-Statusworkshop und 3. Fieldtrip im Kruger Nationalpark

Halbzeit im Forschungsprojekt iWaGSS!
Vom 02. - 25.10.2018 fand der 3. Fieldtrip sowie der 2. Statusworkshop statt. Neben der Feldarbeit mit unseren Multikoptern gehörten bilaterale Meetings mit zum Programm.
Was ist neu im Teilprojekt 8 – Use of Drones for River Monitoring?
Der neue Multikopter von Yuneec (Typhoon H 520) ist einsatzbereit und wurde erstmals unter extremen Bedingungen im Einzugsgebiet des Olifants Rivers getestet. Die knapp 40°C, freilaufende „Big 5“, Wind sowie die starke Sonneneinstrahlung haben „Mensch und Maschine“ gut gefordert. Die neue Technik hat sich bewährt und den Praxistest erfolgreich bestanden.
Der neue Multikopter bietet viele neue interessante Optionen wie z. B. autonomes Fliegen, eine größere Traglast zur Aufnahme von verschiedenen Kameramodulen und eine neue, verbesserte Kamera mit 20-Megapixel Auflösung.
An unterschiedlichen Stellen im Einzugsgebiet des Olifants Rivers und des Selati Rivers wurden systematisch Senkrechtluftbilder mit einer Auflösung von 1,75 cm / Pixel erfasst, um Digitale Surface Modelle (DSM) zu berechnen. Die Erfassung von Ground Control Points (GCP) mit einem DGPS rundeten das Arbeitsprogramm ab.
An mehreren Terminen wurde die neue Technik den südafrikanischen Projektpartnern vorgestellt und es fand ein reger fachlicher Austausch statt.
Zudem wurde zusammen mit SAEON und SanParks mit der Planung zur Erstellung eines 14 km langen Digitalen Surface Modells im sehr schwierig zugängigen Olifants-Canyon im Kruger Park begonnen. Die Feldarbeiten dazu sollen während des 4. Fieldtrips im Mai 2019 stattfinden.
iWaGSS-Statusworkshop
Am 09. und 10. Oktober fand in Phalaborwa (Südafrika) der internationale iWaGSS-Statusworkshop statt. Neben den deutschen Projektpartnern waren auch die südafrikanischen Partner sowie zahlreiche weitere Interessierte vertreten. Insgesamt nahmen an der Konferenz 60 Fachleute teil und informierten sich über den aktuellen Projektfortschritt der 8 Teilprojekte.
Ein weiterer Bestandteil des Statusworkshops waren die Besichtigungen der Monitoringstationen und die Vorstellung der regionalen Aktivitäten und Projekte (u.a. von DWS, SAEON und AWARD). Das Programm wurde durch zahlreiche Arbeitstreffen und die Vorstellung themenbezogener Dissertationen (PhD) abgerundet.
Half way through our research project iWaGSS!
During our 3. field trip from October 02 – 25, 2018 we conducted the third fieldtrip and second status workshop with all project partners. Besides the field work with our drones the program contained several meetings and discussions.
What’s new about work package 8? – Use of drones for river monitoring?
Being for the first time in service our new „Yuneec“ drone (Typhoon H 520) proved its capabilities and power under the extreme conditions within the Olifants River area. 40°C of heat with high solar radiation and strong wind within the habitat of „the big 5“ were quite a challenge to people and equipment – but we successfully made it.
The new drone offers various interesting options, such as autonomous flying, the capability to carry several camera modules as well as a much more advanced camera with a 20-megapixels resolution.
We systematically took a number of vertical photos of various areas along the Olifants and Selati river in a quality of 1,75 cm / pixel to generate and calculate digital surface models (DSM). The collection of ground control points (GCP) with a DGPS completed our program.
During several meetings we introduced this new method to our South African project partners which led to interesting discussions and exchange of experiences.
Together with SAEON and SanParks we kicked off the planning to create a 14 km long digital surface model within the difficult to access Olifants-Canyon in the Kruger Park. This field work is planned for the 4. fieldtrip in May 2019.
iWaGSS-Statusworkshop
On October 09 and 10 the international iWaGSS-status workshop took place in Phalaborwa. Besides the German project partners, our South African partners as well as further interested people attended the meeting. In total about 60 people joined this conference to get information on the current progress in all 8 work packages.
A further part of the status workshop was the viewing of the monitoring stations as well as the introduction of regional activities and projects (such as DWS, SAEON and AWARD). The program was completed by numerous working meetings and presentations of relevant dissertations (PhD).
